Drexel University has distinguished itself over the past ten years as an institution with a rapidly growing research enterprise. During this period, our faculty have achieved an outstanding record in competing for external funding that has resulted in an increase in research expenditures at Drexel University from about $15M in FY '96 to over $100M today. Over this same period, the nature of university based research has changed dramatically. Increasingly research has tended to focus on highly complex, multidisciplinary topics that address significant issues that have societal impact. Drexel faculty have responded to these national trends by developing and participating in the growth of multi-investigator programs that produced "cutting edge" research and technology. These programs have increasingly produced technologies that are successfully commercialized and, thus, introduced into the public sector through our Office of Technology Commercialization. Through our research programs, Drexel is committed to playing a pivotal role in economic development in Southeastern Pennsylvania by establishing close ties with the business community in joint efforts that include solution-oriented R&D, technology commercialization, and workforce development. Drexel has an outstanding reputation in, among other areas, the development of biomedical devices and biotechnology, and has a strong clinical trials unit to test the efficacy of new pharmaceuticals undergoing testing leading to approval.

Drexel's research enterprise will continue to foster the growth and development of innovative research programs that address important societal issues and critical national needs and build on existing and emerging areas of strength. Our strategic approach to research program development will continue to provide opportunities for achieving national and international prominence that will facilitate attracting and retaining outstanding faculty and students.

The Office of Research is committed to facilitating the research activities of the faculty across the institution. The research mission of the University is intertwined with our outstanding graduate and undergraduate research programs and greatly influences the content of our academic curriculum. We look forward to the exciting future of the research enterprise at Drexel University and the discoveries that our faculty and students will contribute to the nation and the world.
